Our Verdict
Citi launched Self Invest earlier this year, I think this is the first bonus we’ve seen on this new account. The up to $3,500 Citi Wealth Management bonus is supposed to work on self directed accounts as well, but this new account is slightly different from my understanding. Probably not worth the hassle for only $500, but might be worth it for some people.
Post History:
- Update 7/3/23: Extended through 9.30.23
- Update 5/17/23: extended 6/30
- Update 7/16/22: Deal is back and valid until 10/31/22.
- Update 11/25/21: Looks like this is actually a public bonus. If you click the direct link it says ‘Learn how you can earn a cash bonus when you open a Citi Self Invest account’, click that and then it shows details of this promotion. Hat tip to Terp.

not surprised with shiti bank
email offer for Citi Custom Cash credit card holder
You can definitely get self-direct CPWM account and it’s free with citi gold. That’s what I did.
I wouldn’t advise trying to churn this one. I have churned this one in the past but ran into the denial last year. I was denied the bonus when there was no anti-churn language. I decided to file an executive complaint with Citi, which ended with a denial of the bonus. Officially, they cited this as once in a lifetime bonus. I requested to close the account numerous times but they have yet to close it. Possibly they leave it open so their system doesn’t consider you a new client after a certain amount of time passes.
100% – I have spent hours on the phone trying to figure things out. I’ve spent several lunch breaks trying to work it out. I am done after this closeout. I’d rather get a lesser churn payout and more of my time back.
I’ve had such a bad time with Citi across several times churning brokerage and banking bonuses. I always tell myself this is the last time. Their support interface and support i
The terms include: Limit one bonus per individual customer. & Customers who receive a bonus are not eligible to receive or qualify for an additional bonus offer. Seems like a one-per-lifetime restriction with that language.
With Self-Invest, it’s hard to get a live person to talk to you. But I somehow managed to talk to someone, and they said it’s once, ever, for Self-Invest. Don’t know if I 100% believe him, or if it’s changed from what he knew, but that’s what he said (then he tried to get me to sign up for a managed account with that other promo, so there’s a bit of conflict-of-interest here).
I’ve been curious myself. Since it just says one per customer I’m inclined to think that’s ever. Strange because the higher-tier CWPM bonus explicitly allows multiple (though restricted somewhat recently), but this one just says one per customer. I did this one years ago and haven’t since because of that language. I might try it at some point just to see. Worst case some funds sit in the account and I don’t get bonus.
It said one bonus per customer — it doesn’t say ever, or within a year or other timeframe. Has anyone done this more than once? The info also didn’t have dates – so is this the generic offer?
Getting to Citigold status for recurring annual subscription rebates and access to museums/gardens in NY.
This higher offer is for a CPWM account though and not Self-Invest. I understand some have reported you can get a self-directed CPWM account, but I personally don’t want the hassle of dealing with a wealth “advisor”. My current Citigold rep leaves me alone with my Self-Invest account.
David Did you receive the targeted offer via email or physical mailer? Which CC(s) do you have with Citi? TIA
the self invest offer does not appear to have a limitation on their other brokerage bonus through their wealth advisors have which have better payouts. the wealth advisors bonus is limited to 2 payouts per calendar year, which they do enforce as i didnt see that new added language and they did not payout my third payout this year. where for the past several years i was enrolling every quarter and receiving a bonus every time, so this may be a good addition ,as they technically are different products
Not as good as targeted credit card member exclusive offer New-to-Citi Funding Cash Bonus $50,000 – $199,999 $500 $200,000 – $499,999 $1,000 $500,000 – $999,999 $2,000 $1,000,000 – $1,999,999 $3,000 $2,000,000+ $5,000
from all the complaints below are people doing this offer because they’ve done all the other major ones already ie etrade, ML, chase? or was there a specific benefit or synergy?
Expect to have to fight to get every dollar. I moved part of my roth for a bonus and citigold and it took weeks of emails. Then did this one and again, pulling teeth even with my citigold status. And I am still waiting for my splurge credit on my credit card. Really not worth the effort in retrospect.
No, ACAT securities count. I got the bonus for an IRA.
William Charles Chuck Appears the offer has been renewed/extended but now goes up to $1K for the highest tier. https://online.citi.com/US/nga/citi-self-invest
Was anyone charged a termination fee of $95 for their Roth IRA account? This feels like scam, since it wasn’t clearly stated when I opened the account.
which advisor is this? They are so nice. I called mine about both the CPWM offer and the self-invest offer and told her I only want to self invest, she then said I can’t do CPWM and need to open an self-invest account myself online. Is there a way to get the CPWM offer then?
UPDATE: posted on Day 145, within T&C.
When did your bonus eventually post? I think it can take up to 180 days depending on the date of your deposit if I understood the T&C correctly, I’m at day 122 myself.
When you do a full account transfer from another broker to Citi, does Citi reimburse fees that the old broker charged for account closure or outbound transfer? I could only find a single post from Bogleheads forum about this, which said that Citi does not reimburse (unlike almost every other brokerage).
Do the deposits need to be cash? In every other brokerage account bonus , you can meet the requirements by transferring cash or other assets like stocks. However the language here makes it sound like you can only meet requirements by depositing cash.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I’ve searched and not found any specific references to this… Will opening an investment account like this Citi Self Invest account show up on EWS like opening a new bank account would? i opened a Citi checking and savings account at the end of June for the 2 promos they were running. Money will be freed up end of Sept, and I’m considering opening a Self Invest account and maintaining $30,000 to keep my Priority Status. But I’m also being conservative with my EWS activity right now because I’m also hoping to open a Cap One savings at the end of the year assuming the $1500 promo is still going, and I’ve read they are EWS sensitive (I’ve opened new Wells Fargo and BoA checking accounts this year too). If anyone has any insight into whether opening a Self Invest account would show up as a new account on EWS, I would appreciate it, thanks.
looks like this expired 6/31/25
I opened a savings account and it still does not let me open this brokerage account.
It looks you need to have a citi checking or savings account first.
