Early Account Termination Fee
Bonus is forfeit if account is closed within 180 days
Our Verdict
Previously there was a $250 bonus that didn’t require a direct deposit. Seems to be available in more states now due to the NYCB merger. The $350 checking bonus isn’t worth considering due to the $25,000 deposit requirement to keep the account fee free (remember account needs to be kept open for 180 days to avoid the closure fee). If you put those funds into a high yield account earning 5% you’d earn $625. We will add this bonus to our best bank account bonuses.

Good catch, let me update.
Terms changed from calendar months to: “each of the three consecutive 30-day timeframes (days 1-30, days 31-60, and days 61-90)”
Hi, Do you know if it works for personal U.S. Bank push?
Sonoma Mann You should definitely freeze Chex, and unfreeze it only when necessary. But you need to know which otherwise Chex-pulling banks will approve you anyway even with Chex frozen. The only way to know this is to read the comments for each bank. Flagstar will not. The ones that will that come to mind are Citi, E*Trade, US Bank, Santander, sometimes Old National, sometimes Keybank, sometimes BMO. and Fifth Third (although this may have changed recently). There are probably others I am forgetting.
I did exactly this and got approved immediately.
Interesting DPs, every branch I called told me the same thing, we can only process it in branch with your signature. My home branch that wouldn’t do it even gave me their fax number, which literally did not work.
I have been inundated with ads for this promo in GA. I went through the first couple pages of the application and it allowed my GA zip code. Possible that the eligible states have expanded? I haven’t submitted the application because looking at the comments, my chex is far from where it needs to be for approval.
Flagstar is literally the worst banking experience I’ve ever had.
pretty sure that’s the old offer, now it’s all direct deposit
9/1 – Successfully opened Elite Checking. For clarification, “$7,500 ($2,500/month) for Elite Checking” means I have to deposit $2,500 over 3 calendar months for the bonus correct? Does each direct deposit have to be $2,500, or can it be cumulative to $2,500 per month?
9/1 – just successfully opened an Elite Checking account. For clarification, does the “Within 90 days receive 3 monthly direct deposits totaling: $7,500 ($2,500/month)” mean that I need to direct deposit $2,500 over 3 calendar months to receive the bonus? Also does each deposit have to be $2,500, or can it be cumulative to $2,500 per month?
denied. ChexSystems. dont know my score.
applied online -> got to funding -> application froze. agent in chat says “sorry please come to branch.”
How do i get offer so I only need 500 depo +3 month hold that I see some people do
Downgraded in branch just before the new month. Will throw in a $500 DD for tomorrow
No, just be sure to downgrade after you get the payout and not before
I didn’t do any kind of stacking, I had remembered reading it wouldn’t work
nice. What’s the sequence of steps to stack the $500 with $50 referral?
5/21 opened 5/27 deposited $1000 8/1 fee 8/26 $500 bonus posted Now to hope downgrading is smooth. And then deal with closing it out in a few months, probably in branch…
Yes, i closed it over the chat.
Were you able to close the account without visiting a branch? if so, what did you do?
Did you have success closing your account without visiting a branch? I’ll have to do that after my 6 month period
How do you plan to close the account? If you don’t go into a branch I’d be curious to hear your experience. I’m far from a branch and opened online
Data Point (DP) 5/13/26 Account opened online in southern IN, far from nearest branch 5/18/26 $700 push from my Chase personal checking account and left there to sit 8/19/26 $500 bonus posted on my Flagstar Account 8/25/26 Pulled all but $100 back into my Chase account and tried calling the corporate customer service line 4 times speaking with a new rep each time to downgrade my account to the cheaper fee option. Was told to come in branch at first and then if not able to visit branch to send a secure message. Called the nearest IN branch to me and explained my problem. CS rep very helpful and said all she had to do was click a button to change my account type. Account downgraded in 5 minutes and I saw the changes reflected in my account online immediately. Bunch of lazy asses at the corporate office I guess. Anyone have any success closing accounts online? That will be my next step after 6 months of account opening otherwise they can claw the bonus back.
I don’t see any residency language here: https://www.flagstar.com/personal/bank/promo/checking/cash-offer-300-500.html
Online.
I didn’t open anything. I’ve tried a few branches on my travels. Only one in AZ allowed OOS, but then declined me for Chex. Use to be Military Checking was its own account that didn’t work for the bonus. They got rid of that account and added a military-fee-waiver option to the Elite Checking instead. It’s possible they expanded footprint eligibility for the Elite Checking, because the promo only applies the restrictive state language to Ready Checking.
did you open the mil checking? looks like its back. does oos footprint+Military qualified?
Online or in branch?
