The Fine Print
- $200 Bonus Offer: To qualify for this bonus offer, you must be a new Barclays Savings customer (current and previous Barclays customers with a Savings account or CD are not eligible), open an account 3/4/2024 through 5/3/2024, fund your new savings account with at least $25,000 within the first 30 days of opening the account, and maintain the balance of at least $25,000 for 120 consecutive days.
- After you maintain the $25,000 balance for 120 consecutive days, the $200 bonus will be added to your account in approximately 60 days.
- Offer expires 5/3/2024.
- You may make multiple deposits to your account from another financial institution(s) to meet the offer requirements, provided these deposits all occur no later than 30 days after opening the new savings account.
- The funds deposited into your Barclays Savings account will earn the then current annual percentage yield listed on barclaysus.com/deposits for the Barclays Savings account.
- Withdrawals could affect your eligibility to earn the bonus if the withdrawal causes the account balance to drop below $25,000.
- The 120 consecutive days will not start until the $25,000 is deposited within 30 days from opening the account.
- The bonus will be applied and treated as interest for tax purposes and could require Barclays to send you a Form 1099-INT (Interest Income) and file it with the IRS for the year in which you earn the bonus.
- While there is no minimum required to open a Barclays Savings account, as described above there is a minimum balance required to earn the bonus offer.
- All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them
Avoiding Fees
Monthly Fees
This account has no monthly fee
Early Account Termination Fee
Unsure if there is any EATF.
Our Verdict
Bonus works out to be 2% APY if you hold for exactly 120 days, base rate on the account is 3.90% so total rate is 5.9%. Better than other basic savings rates but a bit of work as well. We will add this to our list of the best saving account bonuses.

4% is on P2/P3 who signed up with AARP bonus. Non-AARP is 3.5%
Same. Opened 5/7 and funded 5/19 and still no bonus
Just a heads-up for anyone using Barclays: avoid initiating outbound transfers (“pushing” money) to external accounts from their end. I just had my account completely suspended for doing exactly that. To make matters worse, they’re now demanding that I re-verify the linked external account—even though it was already added and verified back in May! If you need to move money out, pull it from the receiving bank’s side instead to save yourself the lock and verification headache.
Same…sent them a secure message via online website lets see what they say.
Apy appears to have dropped to 3.50%. Unless you want to tie up $200,000+ earning 3.65%
If you need an AARP membership, you may be able to stack these offers: 1. TopCashback: $14.14 cash back on a 1-year subscription 2. Chase Offer: $8 cash back when you spend $15 or more
I also had to send ID and statement to verify link to E*trade PSA. Accepted after 4 bus. days. Did not want to go the other way and have to do 3-way calls and such with E*trade. Or worse, have my funds locked up by them.
Yes, there are DPs from people who did both and received both bonuses. If your current account is the Tiered Savings, the AARP offer should still be eligible since it’s specifically for new Select Savings customers. I opened the Tiered Savings first and completed the deposit, and only after that I opened the AARP Select Savings account.
P2 never opened any account before. Can she open Tiered Savings account and then open Select Savings? The language in the terms say they can but just want to confirm if any one did and if they opened Select Savings before getting the Tiered Savings bonus
I guess you have to open this way.
Just opened AARP select savings. I just logged in to my current tied savings account and add this new account. on the confirmation page, I did see 4% rate, but there’s no mention of $400 bonus. I also don’t see any promo code to fill. Anyone could you please share if this is right? Many thanks.
Thanks a lot.
Thanks JAY, I do want to add her as a secondary member, but if we both open the account, we will use the same membership number, not sure if this will cause any problem from Barclays side.

You bastard. I was shaving my nuts while reading your comment and cut myself laughing.
AARP can add a free second member, just wondering if the free member qualify for the Barclays bonus ? I think both share the same membership number. Thanks.
if in the future you’re not an aarp member does your interest rate drop back?
I didn’t find a way to join via AARP, every time I tried to sign up, it will finally turn to ask me log in and open via Barclays page. “ It looks like you already have a Barclays Deposit account. In order to continue, please log in and click on the “Open deposit account” button.” Can I open via Barclays? It has selected saving, and ask you to give AARP ID.
Nope, worked for p1+p2
It looks like standard offer tiered savings interest rate is 3.65% while AARP select savings is 4.00%. So the difference in APY is 0.96% instead of 0.61% I think. AARP $400 offer: 7.04% Standard $200 offer: 6.08% (subtracting 0.35% on the APY to account for lower interest rate)
Anyone get hung up with Barclays not recognizing the AARP number? I’ve been trying for 3+ weeks and I haven’t been able to get through to anyone who can do anything about it.
Thats so weird. Have you checked your credit reports and chex, maybe you are flagged because someone is opening accounts under your identity.
Many thanks for the dp. My current account is indeed tied savings account. Guess I am eligible.
If the account you currently have is a Barclays Tiered Savings account, you should still be eligible for the AARP promotion. The AARP one is a Select Savings account, and the terms specifically state: “To qualify for this bonus offer, you must be a new Select Savings from Barclays customer.” There are also DPs in the comments below from people who opened a Select Savings account after opening a Tiered Savings account and successfully received both bonuses. Good Luck!
I cant find the full terms, is it deposit 20,000 get $400 bonus, how long do you have to leave the money in the account
I currently have Barclays savings account with a small balance. Earned their $200 bonus earlier this year. Now when looking at AARP bonus terms, it looks like that I can open AARP savings account and still qualify for the bonus? Anyone could please chime in and offer some insight? Am I safe to earn AARP bonus with my current savings account open? or I will be better off by closing my current account before opening AARP one? Many thanks.
Thanks for the calculation.
Marcus, Betterment, Everbank, Citi also did the security verification after you opened and deposited the money instead of during account open process. The bank shall not open the account and take people money before completing the verification. My experience with Citi was that they returned the money to where I sent the money in when the verification failed. Only deposit a small amount in the open deposit and wait a couple weeks to see if any verification is needed.
Maybe you happened to have the same name as the girlfriend dumped the guy who reviewed your account so he froze your account.
AARP vs. Non-AARP Bonus Breakdown (120-Day Hold @ 4.00% APY): AARP ($40k deposit for $400 bonus): Bonus Boost: +3.04% annualized Total Effective Rate: ~7.04% APY ($400 bonus + ~$526 base interest = $926 total return over 120 days) Standard / Non-AARP ($25k deposit for $200 bonus): Bonus Boost: +2.43% annualized Total Effective Rate: ~6.43% APY ($200 bonus + ~$329 base interest = $529 total return over 120 days) Verdict: The AARP tier is strictly better on yield, it bumps your overall effective annualized return by 0.61% compared to the $200 offer while putting an extra $200 cash in pocket if you have the $40k liquidity.
