(Update) Chase Changing Rules Around Signup Bonus Eligibility For Sapphire Reserve & Sapphire Preferred

Update 2/11/26: There is a report suggesting that waiting 9 years satisfies the ‘lifetime’ restriction. YMMV. Similar reports indicate that 14-16 years can be enough for the ‘lifetime’ limit. Update 2/11/26: There is a report suggesting that waiting 9 years satisfies the ‘lifetime’ restriction. YMMV. Similar reports indicate that 14-16 years can be enough for the ‘lifetime’ limit.

Update 2/9/26: While the wording of the terms imply that if you previously had a card without getting a bonus (e.g. via product change) you are no longer eligible for the bonus, a recent data point indicates that, in practice, the bonus is applying if you never actually got the bonus before on this card. In short, in practice, it’s likely that the new rule is simple: you get one bonus on each Sapphire card in your life.

Small update 1/22/26: Sites with affiliate links are now reporting this change without referencing this memo so I assume they have confirmation from Chase. Although they are referencing a 1/22/26 date and I don’t see the changes live on any links yet.

Just to clarify again: this rule (at least on paper) is loosening the prior restrictions: a few months back they introduced a lifetime limit which combined CSR and CSP (you can get one bonus lifetime) whereas now there is a lifetime limit for CSR and CSP separately (you can get each one once per lifetime).

Original Post 1/16/26:

Based on a new memo sent out to Chase bankers: beginning 1/25/26, Chase will be clarifying the disclosures on their Sapphire Reserve and Sapphire Preferred to make it clear that customers can earn a bonus on each card version, one bonus per card, even if they currently have an active card. See full text and image below.

Here’s my interpretation of what’s going on:

The current terms on both Reserve and Preferred show the exact same wording:

The new cardmember bonus may not be available to you if you currently have any other personal Sapphire cards open, previously held this card or received a new cardmember bonus for this card. We may also consider the number of cards you have opened and closed, as well as other factors in determining your bonus eligibility.

There are three exclusion clauses there currently:

  1. Old rule: If you have another Sapphire card open (even a different version) you might not get the bonus. New rule: It seems from the Chase memo that this clause will be changing, and we’ll formally be allowed to get the bonus on both cards. To quote the exact words from the memo: “For example: If a client has a Preferred card, they can apply for Reserve and receive the new account bonus.” And the same thing vice versa. (Many months ago, Chase had already changed/clarified that you can open and get approved for both cards. The change now is that you can get the bonus on both cards when applying.)
  2. Rule: If you previously held this card or received a cardmember bonus on this card (meaning this specific card version) then you might not be eligible for the bonus on the same card when applying again. It seems from the Chase memo that this clause will remain the same. We don’t know if it’s a lifetime limit or if after some number of years when the system will reset and allow a bonus again.
  3. Rule: Chase might also consider other factors to determine bonus eligibility. This is the recent innovation of Chase Pop Up Jail where Chase will arbitrarily give you a pop-up indicating that you can’t get the bonus, even if there is no ‘rule’ saying that you are not eligible. New rule: It’s not clear whether Pop Up Jail is going away in favor of a simple one-bonus-per-card-per-lifetime rule, or perhaps Pop Up Jail will still remain after 1/25/26. It sounds to me like Pop Up Jail is going away, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Here is the full text of the Chase memo:

Chase Sapphire Reserve® and Chase Sapphire Preferred®: Card Eligibility Simplified

Beginning January 25, we are clarifying our disclosures to make Sapphire new cardmember bonus eligibility rules easier to understand. Clients can earn a bonus on each card, one time per card, regardless of whether they currently have an active card.

For example: If a client has a Preferred card, they can apply for Reserve and receive the new account bonus.

Some exclusions will still apply in branch, such as if the client has had the product in the past and wants to reopen the same card.

Newest-first by default, because “is it still working?” matters most.

No, should have gotten the pop up. Did you get approved in the end?

After seeing some other DPs of CSP approvals despite having the card in the past, I signed up to give it a go — got approved. Last got the bonus 10 years ago in June 2016 and account was closed a year or so after. Currently have the CSR as well.

I opened my CSP on Apr 05, 2025. However, I don’t see the annual fee posted to my account yet. Anyone knows if Chase goes by number of days or by statement end period to post the fee. TIA.

I opened my CSR card in May 2017. I applied for the CSP today, and got the message “We’ll let you know our decision in writing as soon as we can. Our email or letter will tell you how to provide more information or documentation if we need it.” Is this a bad sign?

Just wanted to add a positive data point. On 2/26/26 I applied for the Sapphire Reserve while holding a Sapphire Preferred. I had never previously received a bonus for a Sapphire Reserve. I initially got a pending message but within 5 minutes I got the approval email. Received the card a few days later and the bonus tracker shows in my account. (note: when I applied, the terms and conditions still had the language saying people who currently have any personal Sapphire card may not be eligible.)

I opened a CSR back in Feb 2017 and kept it for a year before downgrading. I tried to open a CSR today and got the popup telling me I’m not eligible for the SUB. Maybe it’s because I’m just under 9 years by a couple weeks, but it didn’t work for me.

Positive data point (knock on wood) 4/24. Got a CSP in May 2025 and received bonus. Still holding CSP. Never had CSR before at any point. Applied yesterday for CSR. No popup and got 7-10 day message. Approved later same day. No bonus tracker yet in my account for the CSR, but hopefully will appear soon and confirm I’m on track to get CSR bonus.

I am at 4/24, under 5/24 Chuck

DP: I got the CSR bonus in 2016 when it first launched, and received second CSP last year, before Chase starting incorporating lifetime language (product change existing CSP to CF since it was 48 months from the last time I received signup bonus). Went in branch and applied for Reserve card in early Feb 2026, under 5/24. No hard pull and received pending review message. Banker called next day, informing me not eligible for signup bonus on CSR because I had already received it. No bueno for me, but YMMV.

BC
bcIcan#2254615

Currently, it appears lifetime language means just that, once in lifetime.

Chuck#2254325

Ah, my mistake, I’ll delete that.

CH
Chuck#2254324

Interesting. Would you mind sharing if you are over 5/24? I would try a second one on my other EIN, but I’m over 5/24 so not sure it’s worth a shot.

I am not sure if I fall into the scope of the new rule with the timeline, but wanted to provide my data point: I was approved for three (3) Sapphire Reserve Business Cards – all within 6 months of each other. I already received the $2,000 promo on two (2) cards. The tracker shows on the third. All under different EINs (different LLCs). $30,000 spend in 6 months on each card. Approved – July, 2025 Approved – Nov, 2025 Approved – Jan , 2026

My P2 is in the same boat. She had the CSR one time at launch and hasn’t held it in like 8 years. She currently holds the CSP. She attempted to apply for the CSR a week ago and got the pop up saying she wasn’t eligible for the bonus.

I had sapphire reserve in 2017 and got the popup saying i already received a bonus

AN

Appled this card for P2 and got denied. Never had the card before and currently have the Ink cash version. The other current business card is United one. That is it!

AS
Asher#2253895

The “5 year” DP is about two different cards, not the same card twice.

AS
Asher#2253892

To clarify, you’re talking about two different cards, right? You got the Reserve SUB in 2021 and the Preferred SUB now?

WI
Will#2253854

Haven’t received CSP bonus before (I have only ever PC’ed in/out before). I’ve received 2 CSR SUBs- 2021 and refresh 6/2025.
