Our Verdict

Can find details regarding the new Premier card here. Not sure I’d describe the new structure as an upgrade, but some people might prefer it. I don’t think 10x on travel is a particularly attractive offer either.

Newest-first by default, because “is it still working?” matters most.

Never know when there will be an emergency and not want to touch cash or mess with redeeming CD’s right away. Could be any reason but thanks for asking.

I applied for this new card. It was instant decline. It is very possible that they did not pull credit, I did not immediately receive an email notification that they did.

Right. The page says people who don’t upgrade will continue to get the Amazon credit (for now)

TJ
TJ#2411717

Why would you want to carry a balance at rates anywhere near either of those?

TJ
TJ#2411716

Wait, the upgrade gets Amazon credit and travel credit? I thought only the people who don’t upgrade get the Amazon credit.

They opened it up to family members of non-member military within the past few years. Before that, a lot of non-military people got in through a CU that Navy FCU acquired in San Diego.

Is rather just apply for it for the $500 bonus if that’s an option

If you have the original card, can you apply for the new card and get SUB?

NI
Nick#2411444

how though? by faking it? technically yeah there’s nothing stopping someone from doing that by claiming they have a family member or roommate who’s an existing member, but i just don’t like the risk of knowing the credit card might get closed someday.

I explicitly mention that if you have a military background or immediate family members who are existing members, you’d be qualified. Not sure why people tell me that if my grandfather served in WWII I’d be qualified, I’m well aware of that. I’m just saying unlike a lot of credit unions where you can become a member by donating to an association, NFCU is hard to get into. I’ve yet to see a good counterpoint. Not sure why people are so defensive lol

That is very wrong. Think about it .. the CU with the most members in the country is hard to get into? If you would take a moment to look at the Membership Eligibility | Navy Federal Credit Union , you’ll find that it is quite easy to qualify. If your grandfather was in the state national guard, you qualify, for example.

I rather get the ebt discount for $7/m which is $84 a year lol and save some money lol

so I actually upgraded my cash rewards card to the flagship premier one so now I have both the flagship card and flagship premier as I use the prime membership benefit and the $100 flight credit since easy to use on the new card. The 4x on travel seems pretty good and having the 2x catch all could make a good convo

Thats is probably rare. I know A LOT of people who aren’t in the military and doesn’t have family in the military and has a Navy Fed Account.

Multiple DPs are suggesting that you might be audited one day by NCFU and if you can’t show you were eligible when joining the CU, bank accounts and cards will be closed and they may even report it as fraud on your EWS and Chex reports

Not exactly….. You just click a box that you are telling the truth that you have a family member

Don’t know if this was already covered, but I got a email notice saying the annual fee is basically being doubled from $49 to $95/year for legacy cards about a year from now. I just called them & rep stated there were no plans to remove the Amazon Prime benefit though or any changes to the bonus rewards categories, though. Still worth keeping I think just for the free subscription

May not apply to you, Nick, but for the many readers out there who have parents/grandparents who served in WWII or Vietnam, that is enough irrespective of whether they themselves were/are members. I don’t think their online application even asked me my grandfather’s name or for evidence of their service…just their branch, [approximately] when they served, and if they saw combat. Not encouraging/sanctioning fraud by any means, obviously, but the bar to entry is not crazy difficult.

fyi you can upgrade any nfcu card to this new flag ship card. it doesnt have to be the OG flagship

NI
Nick#2411050

NFCU is the largest credit union in the US yet it’s really hard to get in unless you have a military background or have immediate family members who are existing members

almost the travel insurance in this card is name sake.

$150 bonus to upgrade isn’t terrible if you were already planning to spend $1500 (I assume the new $100 annual airline credit stacks with this offer). But personally, I don’t see how the new version is more attractive than the old version. I signed up for the original Flagship because of 2x everything + no FTF + free Amazon Prime. I’m glad to see that the upgrade page confirms that the annual Prime credit is still included.

Be aware it was going to increase my APR from 13.49 to 15.74 if I upgraded to the new card. I’ll leave mine alone. I never carry a balance but someday I might want to and with an 80k limit its 2.25% would add up.

nah I’m keeping my prime benefit
