The Fine Print
- U.S. Bank Smartly® Checking bonus: To be eligible, you or any owner(s) on your new Bank Smartly Checking account cannot have an existing U.S. Bank consumer checking account, had a U.S. Bank consumer checking account in the last 12 months or received other U.S. Bank consumer checking bonus offers within the past 12 months.
- You must also use the promo code 2024JUL at account opening. To receive the bonus, you must open a new U.S. Bank Smartly® Checking account with a minimum deposit of $25 either online, in a branch or over the phone from July 9, 2024 through and including September 26, 2024.
- Additionally, you must enroll in the U.S. Bank Mobile App or online banking within 90 days of opening your account.
- You must also complete two or more direct deposits within 90 days of opening your account that total: $2,000 to $4,999.99 to earn the $250 bonus, $5,000 to $7,999.99 to earn the $350 bonus, or $8,000 or more to earn the $450 bonus.
- A direct deposit is an electronic deposit of your paycheck made through the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network or an electronic deposit of your government benefits, such as Social Security, from your employer or the government.
- Other electronic deposits or person-to-person payments are not considered a direct deposit. Your checking bonus (“adjusted interest”) will be credited to your new checking account within 60 days following the end of the calendar month during which you completed all the offer requirements.
- Account must be open and have a positive balance to receive the bonus. Bonus will be reported as interest earned on IRS form 1099-INT, and recipient is responsible for any applicable taxes. Offer may not be combined with any other checking account bonus offers.
- All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them
Avoiding Fees
Monthly Fees
U.S. Bank Smartly has a $12 monthly fee, this is waived if you do any of the following:
- Have at least $1,500 in monthly direct deposits.
- Hold a minimum average account balance of $1,500.
- Be an owner on an eligible small business checking account.
- Belong to an eligible customer group2 such as youth, young adult, senior or military.
- Qualify for Smart Rewards Gold Tier or above.
- Be an owner on a Bank Smartly™️ Visa Signature® Card or personal State Farm credit card for Alliance clients.
Early Account Termination Fee
There is no early account termination fee to worry about
Our Verdict
Not as good as the recent $500 bonus unfortunately. That being said this bonus is churnable (can’t have had an account within the past 12 months) meaning it’s probably worth resetting that clock as soon as possible rather than waiting for a marginally bigger bonus to potentially return. Because of that we will add this to our list of the best bank account bonuses.

F.A.Q’s
I’m getting the following error ‘we weren’t able to add this offer to your application.’
This is likely because it hasn’t been long enough since you closed your account. The terms say it needs to be a 12 months since your account was closed/since you received a reward, but it seems like the system actually requires one year + two or so weeks.
Where can I find the bonus tracker?
To find the bonus progress tracker:
- From the desktop login, click on: The checking account > Account tab > Look on the right side of the screen, and scroll down to and click New account bonus progress > “My Progress” page appears.
- In the mobile app, tap: On your checking account > Look for “💳 Track your rewards progress.” and tap the blue rectangular icon to the right with a white letter “G”.
However, not everyone sees this tracker, and it’s not instant to update, or appear instantly after opening the account. Hat tip to reader Gadget
I was denied, what should I do?
- If you were denied due to your ChexSystems being frozen you need to call in (866–268–7231, Monday – Friday 7am – 9PM CT) they will request your application ID and then they should be able to get your account approved.
The above also applies if you received the following message:
‘Thank you for your interest in a U.S. Bank account. Based on the information you provided, we’re unable to approve your request for the following account. U.S. Bank Smartly Checking.
In reviewing your application, we noticed inconsistencies in the information provided. Although we tried to verify the information, an account cannot be opened for you at this time.’
Can I close my account as soon as I receive the bonus?
There is no early account termination fee so you can close it after receiving the bonus. Some people like to keep the account open for a little longer although you do need a balance of $1,500 to keep the account fee free.
There is no branch in my state, am I still eligible?
Yes, but you need an existing relationship with U.S. Bank (e.g consumer credit card). If there is a branch in your state no existing relationship is required. Discussed here.
Am I eligible if I’ve closed a business account/received a business bonus in the last 12 months?
The terms state:
- ‘cannot have an existing U.S. Bank consumer checking account, had a U.S. Bank consumer checking account in the last 12 months or received other U.S. Bank consumer checking bonus offers within the past 12 months’
When you opened/received a business checking bonus has no bearing on this consumer bonus. Confirmation here.
Can I stack this with a referral bonus?
Unfortunately, no. The referral link you use also contains an ID & offer code meaning it won’t stack. For example:
- ?offerId=2026RAFCHK
- &promoCode=2026RAF
Usually the referral bonus is only for $100 for the person referring and $100 for the person being referred so even in two player mode it’s better to use the above offer.

That’s kinda borderline… If they initiated closure on June 5, 2025, then the 10th business day after was June 20, 2025. If they somehow initiated closure on June 6, 2025, then the 10th business day after was June 23, 2025.
Or, savings account, or CD… will work.
Completely missed that section about needing a credit card if there is no branch, thank you.
My tracker has stopped updating my deposits so I think they’ve effectively canceled my promo code. It’s been WELL over when the tracker should have shown my $8k but it’s still stuck where it was when it said I was not eligible. I will likely close it today or tomorrow and cut my losses.
Denver_Hiker Type terms like “churn”, “closed”, “365”, “12 months”, “1 year”, etc. in the comment search to find DPs.
I’m getting close to doing my first churn, and it is this. I’m curious if I closed my account on 10/17/25 by calling them up that day and having the account “closed” then can I open a new account on 10/18/26, or is there some kind of grace / delay in closing? Does it vary by bank? by personal/biz account? instead of keeping track of a bunch of different timelines do you just estimate like x weeks of wiggle room for all churns? What happened? Seeing the same after PUSH from Capital one savings
What did it say for transaction type and category?
I added the US Bank account to USAA and did a transfer from USAA to US Bank. I did not use Zelle.
DP: 9/14- Opened 9/17- Push $3k from USAA 9/21- Push $5k from USAA 9/24- $450 Bonus as “adjusted interest”
Correct, no business, all personal.

Oof. 🙁 Sorry to hear that. Will pour one out for you.
Well pour one out for me. I was literally ONE DAY too early. I’m not sure where I pulled 08/27 from a year ago, but they disagree and I can’t do anything about it. I will know in the future to be much more careful with that. This fucking sucks.
Hard to keep track of all the posts. I didn’t see it in the Best Bank Bonus page.
https://www.doctorofcredit.com/targeted-u-s-bank-600-checking-bonus/
Just saw that. With interest rates going up, I am sure this will be available to all at some point.
It’s targeted. “This offer is valid for the intended recipient only and is not transferable”
I don’t believe so but some people like to wait a full 90-180 days to close
Chuck This went up to $600. Got email “Earn up to $600 with Bank Smartly Checking” This offer is valid for the intended recipient only and is not transferable. Restrictions may apply. Not having the tracker doesn’t mean that the promo isn’t attached. If you haven’t started “spoofing” deposits, I’d recommend chatting with an agent to confirm if you’re enrolled in the offer. I also don’t have a tracker but the agent said that she can see the bonus promo attached to my account.
US Bank is very lenient. They count any ACH push as DD. Citibank pushes will work
Hey! Did you end up getting it?
Any recent DPs using Citibank Checking pushes? Most recent DPs I can see date back to April 2026, and I don’t have the tracker in the app or website to try things out and see if they’re working. I had to chat with an agent to confirm I am signed up, and she said the bonus not always comes with a tracker. DW, I haven’t done any deposits yet, so there was nothing in my account that said I was “spoofing” deposits.
Thank you for noting that the tracker takes a few days to update, that’s reassuring! I initiated a standard ACH push from my Chase personal checking that isn’t reflected yet in the tracker, but it’s only been a couple of days.
I wouldn’t recommend it. I do recall DoC posting links before for U.S. Bank offers that stated the offer was targeted, and (non-targeted) folks who tried it didn’t end up getting the bonus. But… there is always that chance it does work. The application WILL allow you to proceed without being targeted, but the bonus doesn’t post.
Bedu I applied for a CD with Chex frozen and the big 3 CRAs unfrozen. Instant denial!
Would you drain back to Capital One Savings or to another account to ensure they do not catch on to the fact that the push was not a true direct deposit?
I’d just like to say that I’m having a terrible experience. I did get an account open OOS tho. Applied for checking+savings OOS, account denied. Called the number and asked why my account went into review and what they need from me, they stated that I could fax my ID and social security card. That, or they can transfer me to another line to have them try to help me make a new application over the phone. I agreed. On the phone, this woman helped me make a new application, but I have no way of knowing if she actually applied the welcome bonus offer. This is the problem. I forgot to get 100% clear confirmation that it was applied on this new application. I did ask and she said yes it was, but now I am having my doubts. My account creation was successful OTP with the woman typing everything in for my application. It was funded via debit card. Anyways, now I have a U.S. bank account. I called them 3 times and asked in various different ways trying to get confirmation that the welcome bonus offer was applied to my account. They can only tell me that as long as I am meeting ALL of the offer requirements and wait the entire period, then I will know if it was successful or not. So… I don’t know. I an sure that one of the offer requirements for phone account signups is that you must tell the person who is creating the account to apply the welcome bonus offer, which I did, but I find it very hard to trust that she did. Anyways, I make some bogus transfers now because I do not want to change my direct deposit for a “maybe.” We will see what happens. I am not too thrilled with this experience thus far. If I don’t get a bonus within a month, I will go the Biz ACH route… That’s my rant for now. Thanks.
DP: Being out of the US Bank market area, I signed up for a CD so I could then sign up for this bonus. I signed up for the CD on 09/09/2026. I logged in today (09/15/2026) to check my CD account and the website presented a popup for a $600 bonus for signing up for the Smartly Checking account. Same terms as the offer in this post, $8,000 in direct deposits for the $600 bonus, I signed up for the $600 bonus offer and my application is currently pending. I’ll try to remember to update this comment if my application is approved.
